Hey All! Our Toronto studio needs your help! We have a whopping FOUR available spaces for September (we’re adding new desks!) and we need to fill ‘em with delightful artists so we can pay our rent and keep making comics! We’re a friendly and supportive work environment and (super bonus!) we have the lowest studio rent in the city.

What are the perks, you may ask? We have a kitchenette, a cute fire escape garden, all the wi-fi you can eat, and an amazingly stocked tea cupboard. We’re close to art supply stores, print shops, great restaurants and a free pool/gym, and we have a streetcar stop right out front. The studio has a security system to protect your stuff, and AC for the hot summer months. Also, a group of helpful, friendly cartoonist ladies including Xaviere Daumarie (Bitten, Museum Horribilium, a bunch of manga translations) Meaghan Carter (Take Off, Valor), Megan Kearney (Beauty and The Beast, Valor) and Ally Rom Colthoff (Chirault, and a bunch of TV shows).

SO! If you’ve been working from home and it’s getting lonely, if you’re working P/T and ready to take your art more seriously, or if you’re a crafter/seamstress/writer/painter/artist in need of a dedicated workspace, drop me a message at kearneymeg@gmail.com or here on tumblr! <3

Seriously, it’s a great workplace and some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. If you’re in Toronto, you wanna work here.

So does anyone else think that Alex and Jamie’s ghost hunt in “Arcadian Gothic” (S2E7) was kind of a date? Like, Alex brought flowers, they had dinner by candlelight, Jamie kept making triple entendres, and afterwards Jamie took Alex home. Is this just me?

I know…

I agree that Alex and Vanny could have a really interesting relationship, but I guess I would see that as a more platonic thing. I’m sort of annoyed that shows can only imagine intimacy as being romantic or sexual or whatever.

(By the way, I’m not saying it was a date, because I know the flowers and candles were for the ghost and all that, it’s just that it looked like one and I think it was meant to look like one).

I want to say it was meant that way, but this episode was directed by Millicent Wrong, and if you look carefully, every episode she directs except for “Through the Grass Darkly”( S3E2) includes candles and flowers somewhere, either in the background or as a story element — Even the Solstice Special (in Emily’s bedroom, beside the fireplace. It’s quick so you might have to frame through). So I’m inclined to play it neutral here.

So remember those zipper bags I ordered where the foxes were cut off???

Well, I will be getting them redone, but that still means I have a bunch of bags I can’t really sell for full price. I don’t know how well that’s going to go, so I figure I can do a giveaway to get rid of some of them! So here’s the deal, I have six bags I will send out to six of you guys, free of charge. That’s three ‘can you not’ designs and three ‘nope’ designs.

To enter the giveaway, just reblog this post anytime between now and Monday, June 23rd. Likes do not count, and no, you don’t have to be following me. I will ship internationally, but I may whine about the cost later. (Don’t worry, I promise to follow through despite my whines.) I will then pick six winners at random, and they’ll get their choice of the two designs, first come, first serve style. I’ll be contacting the winners via askbox, so make sure to have them open. If I do not hear back from a winner in 48 hours, I will pick the next person.

I believe that covers it. Happy giveaway, you guys!

Hey friends and Dear Readers! Convention season starts SO SOON and posters are about to go to print. If you’re not going to be able to attend Toronto Comicon or Minnesota Fabletown, but would like to own any of the above posters (or if you would like a postcard set instead!), you can email (BATBcomic@gmail.com) or PM me to reserve a copy!

Oh my goodness, is the second image from a version of “The Armless Maiden”? That’s a great take on the tale!

Yep! It’s the swahili version, “The Girl With One Hand”. In that version, The Girl makes her living with a pumpkin patch, but when she accidentally insults her brother’s wife, he comes to smash up all her pumpkins. She tries to protect them, and he chops off one of her hands. As per the usual tale, she eventually marries a kind man and gives birth to a child, but through miscommunications is expelled by his family while he is away. In the wilderness, she rescues a little snake, who tells her to bathe in a spring nearby. She loses her baby in the water, and when she recovers him, she also recovers her maimed hand. The snake’s family is grateful to her for saving their child, and give her blessings that help her reconcile with her husband’s family, who turn her brother out into the wilderness for what he did to her.
